“The world is on fire. I’ve been warning about the perfect storm brewing due to Covid, conflict, climate, and now, rising supply costs. IT IS HERE.” These are the words of the UN food program director David Beasley. The former South Carolina governor tweeted out these words along with a 1,000 word “executive summary” of the UN plan to combat world hunger. Beasley did so in direct response to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who went back and forth with Beasley on Twitter and stated that he would sell Tesla stock to fund a plan if the WFP could describe exactly how it would work.

The plan maps out specifically that it would target over 40 million people in 43 different countries who are on the brink of famine. It also details exact spending including $3.5 billion to buy and deliver food directly and $2 billion for cash and food vouchers in places where markets could function. Beasley continued “You asked for a clear plan and open books. Here it is! We’re ready to talk to you and anyone else who is serious about saving lives”

As of Wednesday, Elon Musk had not yet responded. The back and forth exchange stems from a CNN interview with Beasley who mentioned Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos as two men who could end world hunger nearly by themselves. The plan is approximately 2% of Musk‘s net worth. Will he and other billionaires step up to the challenge?
