The Ryan Show Spotlight: RS Desserts LLC
“Adversity causes some to break and others to break records.’ It’s true when you think about it. We can either crumble under certain circumstances or we can take what we have been given and do something remarkable with it. When it comes to Shaneice Gordon and her 8 year old son Ra’Shawn Peterman, they have chosen the latter. You see, Ra’Shawn was born with what’s called Optic Nerve Hypoplasia which is the number 1 leading cause for blindness in newborns in the United States. Ra’Shawn can see only light, shapes and details are a complete mystery to him. Shaneice was determined to not let her son’s condition stop her from providing him with the best life possible. She took matters into her own hands, literally.
Using the culinary art of baking, a skill she picked up from her Great Grandmother as a child, Shaneice founded RS Desserts. “ I wanted to take something that was a passion of mine and use it in a positive way to both provide for myself and Ra’Shawn while raising awareness about ONH. The vision really all came together at the same time to turn it into a full time business. I could do what I love, people enjoy it and spread the message about Ra’Shawn as far as possible.”
From candy apples and cupcakes to rice crispy treats and cakes for events, Shaneice began to fill stomachs and warm hearts with her amazing treats and tales of Ra’shawn’s courage and kindness. There are many side effects that her son has to face but Shaneice says that with the success of her business and inspiration from Ra’Shawn, 2021 is going to be their best year yet. “The support and amazing reaction we have received through RS Desserts has been so crucial to our continued success. If we keep pushing and getting the word out there, my goal is to have people talking about ONH worldwide. This is not only about Ra’Shawn but also every child and parent who has had to go through the same things we have so to be a voice for them is very important to me.”
Moving forward into 2021, look for bigger and better things from RS Desserts. They will be launching a website in the next few months to help with catalogue and orders as well as plans to take ONH awareness up a level. Shaneice and Ra’Shawn’s story can teach us all a little something about appreciation, humility and strength.
