North Fork Vineyard Workers form First Farm Laborers Union in N.Y. State History

Farm workers at Pindar Vineyards in Peconic made history as the first workers to organize and form a union under the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act that was passed back in 2019. This decision came down after an appellate court in 2019 found that the 1937 State Employees Relations Act violated the workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain as stated in the New York State Constitution. The Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act of 2019 gave farm workers equal employment rights as workers in other industries under the law.

The workers seem very pleased with the passing of the bill. They are routinely snubbed basic rights like days off or sick time.

The farm workers hope that this union will spark other workers in other fields to fight for their basic rights and unionize as well.
